The Medicine Hat Police Service has observed an increase in electric motorcycles being operated in the community. While these vehicles are sometimes mistaken for e-bikes, some electric-powered vehicles may be classified under Alberta legislation as electric motorcycles rather than bicycles.

A vehicle may fall outside the legal definition of an e-bike if it produces more than 500 watts of power, cannot be propelled by muscle power, can exceed 32 km/h, or otherwise does not meet the legal requirements for an e-bike.

Electric motorcycles operated on public roadways must meet the same legal requirements as other motorcycles, including registration, insurance, and the appropriate class of driver’s license. Riders operating an unregistered or uninsured electric motorcycle, or operating without the proper license, may be subject to multiple charges or fines.

These vehicles are also not permitted on multi-use pathways or other areas designated for bicycles. Combined fines and penalties can exceed $4,000.

The Medicine Hat Police Service encourages riders and parents to review the rules for electric-powered vehicles before purchasing or operating them to ensure the vehicle is legal for its intended use.
