MVC Involving Pedestrian

On July 16, 2026, at approximately 7:38 a.m., members of the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS), along with Fire Services and EMS, responded to a report of an injury collision involving a pedestrian.

The investigation determined that an 84-year-old male pedestrian was crossing within a marked crosswalk, with the pedestrian crossing signals activated, when he was struck by a pickup truck completing a left turn from southbound 13 Avenue SE onto Southview Drive SE.

The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to hospital and was later airlifted to Calgary for further treatment of serious, life-threatening injuries.

Heavy fog and poor visibility were present in the area during the morning hours and are being considered as factors in this collision.

As a result of the investigation, the driver of the pickup truck has been charged with one count of Failing to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk, contrary to Section 41(1) of the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation and is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on September 25, 2026. The investigation remains ongoing.

The MHPS reminds motorists to slow down, remain alert, and yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks. Pedestrians are also encouraged to make eye contact with drivers whenever possible and ensure vehicles have stopped before entering the roadway.
