Volunteer Opportunity – MHPS Victim Assistance Unit

The Medicine Hat Police Service Victim Assistance Unit is currently recruiting volunteers. As a volunteer for the MHPS Victim Assistance Unit you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Must possess valid AB Class 5 Drivers License
  • Must be willing to complete extensive online and in-house training
  • Must be available for a minimum of three scheduled 12-hour call out shifts per month and a minimum of 2 h per week in-office.
  • Must pass a Police Service security clearance as outlined in the Medicine Hat Police Service Policy and Procedures.

Volunteers respond to crisis call outs as requested by MHPS 24/7 and provide practical support during the first critical hours after a crime or tragedy.

Follow-up services are provided as needed in the weeks and months after an incident.

Services include but are not limited to:

  • Information about the justice system and support throughout the justice proceedings
  • Information about key court dates or court outcomes, Victim Impact Statements, Restitution Requests and the Victim of Crime Assistance program
  • Referrals to other organizations as needed, please note Victim Assistance does NOT provide counselling
