Highway 1 Summer Construction Notice

The Medicine Hat Police Service, along with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors advises motorists that construction will begin on Highway 1 in Medicine Hat to replace existing 600V roadway illumination infrastructure. Work is scheduled from July 13 to August 23, 2026, along Highway 1 between 1 St SW and Box Springs Rd NW, including the bridge over the South Saskatchewan River.

The project includes removing existing streetlights and installing new lighting systems along the corridor. Work will generally take place during daytime hours, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Motorists should expect intermittent lane restrictions and temporary speed reductions where required. Areas already posted at 80 km/h will remain at 80 km/h. Drivers are reminded to obey construction signage, watch for workers and equipment, and allow extra travel time through the work zone.
