E-Bike Collision Results in Injuries to Two Youths

On July 4, 2026, at approximately 12:55 p.m., members of the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS), Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to an injury collision involving a motor vehicle and an e-bike at the intersection of Cameron Road SE and Ross Glen Way SE.

Upon arrival, emergency responders located two youths who had sustained injuries as a result of the collision. Both were transported to hospital for treatment. One of the youths was subsequently transferred to a Calgary hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries. The driver of the motor vehicle was not injured.

The investigation determined that the driver of the vehicle had come to a complete stop at the posted stop sign and had begun making a right turn onto Cameron Road SE when an e-bike carrying two youths entered the intersection from the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and rode into the path of the vehicle.

Investigators also determined that neither youth was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the collision. The absence of helmets contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained.

Based on the findings of the investigation, no charges are expected to be laid.

The Medicine Hat Police Service would like to remind the public that under Alberta's Vehicle Equipment Regulation, all cyclists and passengers under 18 years of age are required to wear a properly fitted and approved bicycle helmet while riding a bicycle. Riders and passengers of power-assisted bicycles (e-bikes) must wear an approved helmet regardless of age.

Helmets have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of serious head injuries and can play a critical role in preventing life-altering injuries during a collision. MHPS encourages all cyclists and e-bike riders to wear an approved helmet every time they ride and to ensure their helmet is properly fitted and in good condition.
