On June 24, 2026, at approximately 2:43 p.m., the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) responded to a high-risk incident at a residence in the 1900 block of Upland Drive SE.
When officers arrived, they observed an active physical altercation inside the residence. A victim was safely removed from the home, and officers contained the scene while working to safely take two individuals into custody.
Police negotiators were deployed and contacted an adult male, who exited the residence and was arrested without further incident. The male, 41-year-old Nathan Canfield of Medicine Hat, was charged with the following:
- Assault with a weapon
- Uttering threats
- Breach of probation (4 counts)
A second individual remained barricaded inside the residence and was believed to be in possession of a weapon.
Due to the elevated risk, the MHPS Tactical Arrest and Control Team (TACT) was deployed, and negotiators made several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the situation. After judicial authorization was obtained to enter the residence, officers entered the home at approximately 9:46 p.m. and arrested the second individual, who resisted arrest.
As a result, a 43-year-old male, from Medicine Hat, was charged with the following:
- Resisting a peace officer
- Breach of a Conditional Supervision Order (x3)
- 41 Criminal Code charges related to seven outstanding warrants
Both individuals were held for judicial interim release hearings. Canfield was remanded into custody pending his next court appearance on June 29, 2026, in Medicine Hat Provincial Court.
The 43-year-old male, whose name will not be released until the charges are sworn, remains awaiting his judicial interim release hearing. The male sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by EMS. No members of the public or MHPS officers were injured during the incident.
The MHPS thanks the public for their cooperation and patience during the incident, which required a significant police presence to maintain public safety.
