On June 15, 2026, the Medicine Hat Police Service received a report of a stolen vehicle in the Southeast Hill area. Officers found the vehicle shortly afterward, but when they attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled at a high rate of speed. For public safety reasons, officers did not pursue the vehicle.
Later that day, officers responded to an unrelated call downtown and encountered the same individual believed to be connected to the earlier stolen vehicle incident. When officers attempted to arrest him, he fled on foot and entered the South Saskatchewan River to evade arrest.
With the assistance of a MHPS Police Service Dog Unit (K9), officers safely apprehended the individual and removed him from the river. Despite being taken from the water, the individual continued to resist arrest and made further attempts to flee before being taken into custody.
Brenden Carey, 27, of Medicine Hat, faces the following charges in relation to this incident:
- Possession of stolen property over $5,000
- Resist arrest
- Dangerous driving
- Flight from police
- Breach of Release Order (2 counts)
- Breach of Probation (2 counts)
Carey was held for a judicial interim release hearing where he was remanded into custody until his next court appearance in Medicine Hat Provincial Court on June 17, 2026.
