The Medicine Hat Police Commission is seeking a respected and experienced Chief of Police to be responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the police department. As the senior leader of the department, the incumbent will be responsible to the Police Commission for carrying out the Police Service Mission, progressively developing the Service around its adopted core values and for all aspects of planning, coordination, administration, and the implementation of Police Service activities.

As the organizational leader, the Chief of Police will ensure effective governance of the Service through implementation of appropriate plans, budgets, policies and procedures to achieve the department’s vision, mission, and values. As a strong relationship builder, the Chief of Police will be required to develop cooperative relationships within the Service, Commission and with other agencies to mutually strengthen the level of service provided to the public while maintaining independence between the Service and political roles.

The Chief of Police must be an exceptional communicator with the ability to articulate clear messages that will formulate a compelling vision for the Service while establishing the philosophy and direction of the organization’s relationship with the public and media. As a motivating team-leader the Police Chief will ensure the ongoing success of the Service through effective recruitment, mentorship, ongoing education for staff, and consistently leveraging strengths of team members to improve morale.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in a discipline related to law enforcement, criminal justice, administration or social science. A minimum of 15 years police service experience is required, including at least five years in progressively responsible senior administrative, management or executive roles. Demonstrated experience in a medium to large police service is desired.
